Online Classes start September 7, 2010 at 7pm
The first session is a free introduction, no obligation, then $70 for the next 7 weeks just $10 a session. Please click the 'Read More' link below for details.
These classes are aimed at the 'older' generation trying to get to grips with their personal confuser.
To host these classes I'll be using a service called DimDim, you will see and hear me as well as my screen during the sessions. You will also be able to use the chat window to ask questions. Nearly as good as actually being in the same room but you don't have to venture out of your own home.
A link to access the class will be here nearer the time. Any questions please don't hesitate to contact me using the link on the menu.

I have written about Lastpass before but I have always had a tiny reservation about being fully behind it because I had not heard an indepentant review of how secure it is from someone I trust. Now I have, Steve Gibson a very accomplished security expert and someone I do trust has done a very nice breakdown of how it works on the Security Now podcast, episode 254. After listening to his review I am now fully 100% for this product, get it!
Managing all your passwords is a pain, if you use anything memorable it is easy to crack. If you use the same password everywhere then it is even worse as your identity depends on the weakest link. And believe me, you don't want to trust your banking passwords to some unknown backstreet store. Lastpass can generate secure passwords, remember them and fill them out on the webpages when you visit. It can also remember all your information for online forms, fill out your credit card information and store secure notes. All you need to do is remember the one password to log into Lastpass itself. And if you don't trust that one password there are second factor authentication systems available too. This system is SECURE folks, works on all platforms from your desktop to your mobile phone. For a lot more details listen to the podcast, your online security is worth it. |

Personally I really like being safe in the knowledge that if my hard drive dies, which it has a couple of times, my files are safe. Even if the worst happens and my house is completely wiped out, I can still get my pictures and documents back. So for a long time I have been using an online backup service, namely Jungledisk which I have written about before. But now I think it is time for a change as Jungledisk and Amazon have increased their prices. I feel as thought they are "nickle and diming" me charging not only for the storage space but the data transfer as well. So I would always have to think about how much they are adding to my bill everytime I wanted to look at a file. But don't get me wrong, I still value this service highly for business use as it has a better security model, but for home use I thought I'd try something different.

I recently had a user bring me their computer for a checkup, nothing unusual about that. One of the first things I look for is if all the latest security updates for windows have been applied and if it is on the latest service pack. It wasn't, which isn't unusual. I'd like to make a suggestion to Microsoft. It is good that you get a little popup in the taskbar that tells you when updates are available. What I suggest is that this pop-up should turn red if the updates are not installed within a day. If three days go by and they are not installed it should start popping up every 4 hours, then if 5 days passes it should come up every hour. If a week passes then the whole screen is taken up by a graphic of a person being hit on the head with a hammer with flashing big red letters… INSTALL UPDATES! |

Input Director may only be interesting to a small percentage of you, but for those people it is incredibly useful. Basically, if you have multiple computers you can use one keyboard and mouse to control them both, provided they are on the same network. This is like a software KVM (a hardware switching device, Keyboard, Video and Mouse). I find it very useful when using my netbook alongside my main desktop computer. I have two big monitors in front of me, slide my mouse cursor off the left or right hand edge and it appears on my netbook screen. Once there both my keyboard and mouse then operate that device, cool eh?
My netbook does have a useable keyboard and touchpad but if I'm near my main computer why not use its input devices. If this is something you might be interested in click the link above and check out their website, it's supported by donations so if you find it useful send them a couple of bucks. |

I read an article a while ago postulating that cell phones would replace many of the devices we use on a day to day basis. Some were obvious, others I had my doubts about but many are coming true. Since getting my Droid I have really noticed it happening……

Driveimage XML vs. Todo Backup |

Backups are important, drives fail. Regular users should, at least, be backing up documents, photos etc. but if you are a little more techie you may want to back up your entire drive or partition. I find it useful to image (create a full backup) of my system drive so if it gets infected, or the drive fails, I can get back to a working system with the basics installed very quickly.
I have used various programs for doing this over the years, recently I have been using DriveXML from www.runtime.org but have just found Todo Backup from EaseUs, there is a direct link at www.todo-backup.com I already use, and like, EaseUS's Partition Manager software.
